The factory radio in my '01 Golf has the capability to accept a CD changer, but I never had one. I've been using a cassette adapter all these years, first for my portable CD player, now for my iPhone. Would be possible to rig an input for the iPhone to the CD connection on the radio. Doesn't have to be an dock connector, could just be an AUX cable running from the headphone jack. Would this work? (That's not my photo, btw, but the radio is the same)

My car's got a Pioneer radio, probably of similar vintage as your radio, which has a CD changer connection as well. I got a cable from Ebay that turns the CD changer port into an AUX-in. So exactly what you want. So, search Ebay or some similar site (or forum) if cables like the one I've got are available for VW radios.

If you are lucky, all you need is one of these. Did you pull the radio out to see what the back looks like?

No, I haven't pulled the radio. Never pulled a radio before. I have one of those cables, btw. I use it to hook the iPhone to my stereo.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Look up Dice integration kits, hooks in to the CD changer connector (the hook up is actually in the trunk/hatch of B5 Audi A/S4s) My S4 is the same year as your Golf so I'd be shocked of they didn't have something that would work for your car.
I've also seen they can be hooked into the back of the radio at the front end of the CD changer imput, but it requires removal of said radio so the trunk hook up may be easier if available in your Golf.

There might be wires in the back, I can't look because my wife has the car. Thanks for the tip.

Yes. In fact, this is a semi-common mod to older factory radios. Heck, you might even be able to find instructions on here and/or Lifehacker (the only other tolerable Gawker site).
There are quite a few such radios on eBay with the added AUX.

My motorcycle has a cassette player. I bought an adapter that goes in the player and has an input jack. I use it with my ipod.

I've had one of those for years and have been using it successfully. The trouble is that there is a ton of noise that comes through from the tape player. Dolby cuts some of it, but it also cuts all the high sounds. I'm hoping to remove the adapter from the mix. It looks like it should be fairly easy, but I've never done anything like this before.

Found this video on YouTube. Looks like RCA plugs won't cut it. I'll need some sort of harness adapter, something like what durrtlang posted in this thread.

Found this for $8 on ebay. $8 more for the keys to remove the radio, and I should be done for $16 and an hour of work. Hopefully.

As Soto posted, the Blitzsafe adapter. I have one in my '02 and '05 VWs...works well and beats the stink out of a cassette adapter or an FM adapter.

I just bought this cable for $4, with $4 shipping. Yeah, those cassette adapters are a drag, but I've been rocking them for years.

I'd look for a pdf of the manual for your radio first, so you can check if this plug will fit your radio. Or you could do an image search on google.

Let me know how that works...a friend just bought an '04 Golf and is in the same boat as you. Where did that cable come from?

Found it on ebay. I searched "aux converter 2001 golf" or something like that. I can send you a link, if you like. I think, though, that with the '04 Golf you'll need a 10-pin connector. This is an 8-pin connector, and I think I read that they stopped using the 8-pin after 2002. But don't quote me on that.

My '02 has the ten pin...I think. I'd have to look and I'm too damn lazy to do THAT right now :)

Dumb question, but are you sure it doesn't have a CD changer already? I have an 01 Jetta and I saw the CD button like that for about 6 months until my friend finally told me that the changer is in a compartment in the left side of the trunk. Are you sure yours isn't hidden somewhere?

Yeah, I'm sure. The salesman showed me where it would go, and it ain't there.
